I loved planning my wedding but was pretty tired by the time we were a month away and waiting at City Hall in downtown NYC to get our marriage license. It really is a beautiful place to get married and they even have a little gift shop where you can purchase pretty bouquets. My fiance suggested that we just elope at that moment and had I not been wearing an ugly argyle sweater and khaki's that morning I might have done it.

I'm not much of a jewelry person but I fell in love with a few designers this month and bought a few things. I loved the earrings from Babette that were a giveaway from Cup of Jo (she always has great giveaways!) and had to check out her store. Babette was swamped with orders and despite a delay in shipping I just got this pretty feather necklace in a couple of days ago. I'm smitten and have worn it every day this week!

While visiting friends in Chapel Hill, NC a few weeks ago I found this adorable store Toots & Magoo. I seriously could not get enough of it and must have walked around and inspected everything at least 3 times and before going home with a few goodies including a Love necklace by Betsy & Iya.

Cleaning Service

What perfect timing! Apartment Therapy just posted this list of tips when preparing for a cleaning service. I'm having someone come to my home this weekend to give an estimate on having monthly service and I couldn't be more excited. It would be so nice to come home from work and have everything clean all at once.

Here are their suggestions:
•Communicate. Provide instructions for keys, alarms, door codes and pets before the day the cleaning person comes to your home.
•Also discuss in advance any special cleaning requests you have that may be particular to your home or your needs. This way, the cleaning person can come prepared and there are no misunderstandings about costs or the length of the visit. You can also leave a list out, but this doesn't provide an opportunity to answer questions should they arise.
•Pick up clutter. The cleaning service is there to clean, not necessarily to organize unruly paperwork, toys, dishes or other clutter. If you get these things in order before the cleaning person arrives, you are saving them time and allowing them to better get down to business. Also be sure to put away anything you would not want damaged during cleaning.
•Provide feedback early on. If you don't, a pattern becomes established and it becomes even harder to speak up down the road. Dissatisfied with something after the first visit? Speak to someone right away to nip it in the bud upfront. Blown away by wonderful service? Let the cleaning company and your particular cleaning person know!

Fads, Trends, Classics and Just Out Right Mistakes

We know what the difference is between Fads, Trends (lasting at least 2 seasons longer then the Fad), etc. But the real question is do you know one when you see it and how to avoid one when it's hard to tell the difference. The worst is when a Fad or Trend that you fell in love with only makes you feel regret (remember acid wash jeans or the big bangs of the 80's?)

Unfortunately, I can't help too much here when is comes to telling the difference. To start with, I have loved the following slogan.

I loved the above poster for a few reasons: I was a history major and art history major - I love WWII and any vintage propaganda, plus my grandmother came over from England just after the war. My last reason for loving the slogan is that I'm pretty uptight. It didn't help that I saw it all over the blogosphere and in mags, but I really did like it for other reasons other than popularity. Anyway, the slogan has totally lost it originality once I saw CB2 selling it in rug version.

So here is the lesson that I have learned: Take a fad and make it your own. I'm looking into getting a copy of this sassy propaganda poster.

It may not fit my uptight personality but maybe it will remind me to keep gossip to a minimum.

Now I just pray that this is a short lived fad - my thighs are not a fan!

This is almost old news at this point but I'm still pretty excited about it. On February 14th (Weekend Edition) I was quoted in an article in Newsday's Bridal section about the centerpieces at our wedding. So here is an online version of the story (the printed version had a photo of our table centerpiece). I love that the online version has a DIY video on how to create your own bouquet.

Recap of San Fran

I'm sorry I have been gone so long! Work has been insanely busy and there has been so much going on here at home too but that just means that I have a ton to write about! So here is the long overdue update from my San Fran trip from last month.

The weather was pretty miserable but I got a lot in during my 4 day visit. I had a basic plan put together for the weekend before I even landed. And who could be a better source then a local? I pulled suggestion from blogger sfgirlbybay plus some tips from Travel Channel's Samantha Brown and an awesome app that helped me to navigate.

Sfgirlbybay had some great shopping ideas. I headed up to Fillmore Street for a little shopping hitting up The Nest, Papersource, Browser Books, Kiehls, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Jonathan Adler and then over to Woodhouse Fish Co. for some yummy fish tacos. I really enjoyed the shopping here versus the main shops in the Union Square as I have the opportunity to shop at many of the same stores in NY and the Fillmore area is quiet with a lot less tourists (however I couldn't resist stopping in Anthropologie over in Union Square).

Our hotel was just a few blocks away from this little park on Clay and Davis that was heavily populated with these green parrots who became very friendly when offered birdseed. I believe that they populate many of the parks in San Fran.

You can't go to San Fran and miss Chinatown (the largest Chinatown outside of China). I picked up some delicious tea at the Red Blossom Tea Company and a pretty set of chopsticks.

I was told that I should not miss Fisherman's Warf but aside from the sea lions and the view of Alcatraz I could definitely have skipped it. I was thrilled to see the sea lions as just a few weeks before they had gone missing but it seems that a few have returned!

Unfortunately, tickets to Alcatraz's night tour were sold out for the entire weekend so next time we will plan ahead and order in advance.

Our first night we happened upon this cute little alley way of restaurants which is considered the French Quarter of San Fran. I think only one of the restaurants were French but it was so cute.

One morning I took off for a short walk that turned into a long afternoon of hill hiking and being very lost. I was totally exhausted and pretty sore the next day but historic homes and gorgeous views of the bay were well worth it.

One of my favorite places was the Ferry Building. I seriously went there 3 out of the 4 days. I had an awesome burger and one of the best milkshakes I have ever had over at Taylors Refresher. I also had a great time tasting a little something from each of the specialty shops and picking up a gardener's basket and a vintage style map of San Fran from The Gardner.

At Saturday's Farmers market there was gorgeous fruit, veggies, spices and flowers.

Other highlights to the trip included a mouth watering dinner at the Peruvian restaurant La Mar, a tour of Tcho's chocolate factory - more on that later and of course a walk through Haights-Ashbury.

Animal Shelter Donations

My mom is getting rid of all her old towels so I was looking for place to donate them when I came across this great list of items from who else than Apartment Therapy.

Here are 10 common items that are welcome at many shelters:

• Blankets. Fleece blankets are especially good for pet bedding. They keep animals warm and comfortable, and hopefully make them feel at home in the shelter until they find a cozier permanent home.

• Plastic bags (with no holes!). Because doggy doo happens. We’re not sure how much of an effect the plastic bag ban in SF has had on shelters’ supplies of plastic bags, but we know that plastic bags are always welcome donation items.

• Heating pads (good condition, only). They’re used to comfort and keep newborn kittens, puppies, and wildlife infants warm.

• Cleaning supplies. Keeping shelters clean and sterile is a huge job. They are never at a loss for paper towels, large trash bags, bleach, dish and laundry detergent, buckets, mops, brooms, etc.

• Batteries. Some shelters need AA and AAA batteries to run their microchip scanners.

• Baby food. The strained meat variety is used to feed kittens.

• Latex and rubber gloves. For animal handling and cleaning purposes.

• Office supplies. Pens, pencils, staplers, etc, to be used for administrative purposes in the shelter offices or front desk.

• Other bathroom linens. Some shelters also take bath mats and fluffy toilet seat covers to line animal crates.

• Cell phones. Donate them in the name of your favorite participating animal shelter (or other good cause) at WirelessFundraiser.com. Participating shelters earn commission from cell phones that are donated in the name of their cause. The Web site allows donors to print a postage paid shipping label to send in their old phones.

Wednesday night Apartment Therapy had a small-ish (they had a great turn out) event at Knoll with Jonathan Adler as the guest speaker. I'm not a huge fan of Jonathan Adler but I have 100% respect for what he does and I was incredibly inspired by the event. I love the idea that Apartment Therapy is bringing these events, designers and like-minded people together. Honestly, I could not live in most of the rooms that Jonathan Adler designed. They were fun and interesting but I cannot relax in that much color. What I love is, is that he doesn't care. Jonathan does what he likes and refuses to edit his creativity for others. Lesson: Do what you like, who cares if other people don't like it. Design for yourself and make sure it makes you happy!

While the Holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year it can also very easily become very stressful and overwhelming. I usually need to remind myself that I am not Martha Stewart, I do not have a staff of people to help me cook, clean, decorate, etc. (no, the husband is not a staff member even if he has turned out to be very good at glittering) and that does not make me a bad person. So here are a few time savers that I hope can help me and you out this year:If you have the time and the creativity to make your own cards then all the more power to you (I did it the last few years but I just don't have the time anymore) but if you don't then don't worry. There are tons of great cards out there. This card is from Rifle Paper Co.

It usually takes me a couple of weekends to complete my shopping plus the wait for Internet orders to come in, but once everything is in Good House Keeping recommends setting up a wrapping stations and wrapping everything at once. I like this idea, once it's all done I can officially cross it off the list - just make sure you don't leave this until Dec. 24th.

Ikea and the Tea Shelf

Over the wonderfully long Thanksgiving weekend, I went over the Brooklyn Ikea to purchase the shelf to make this tea shelf. To say the least, I walked out with a much larger, more expensive and already put together tea shelf. I love DIY stuff, but sometimes there is just something out there that is already made and is exactly what you needed.

Please excuse the poor photo quality, but here are some photos from the Ikea room set-ups. I have tried to keep some distance from Ikea since my first apartment was pretty much entirely furnished with Ikea furniture. However, I really like the new kitchens (appliances and all), bathrooms and country style lines. If my landlord would allow it, you can bet that this is what my kitchen would look like.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays since it's about my favorite things - family and food, and the giving thanks isn't too bad either. This year I am taking care of dessert plus making a birthday cake for my mother-in-law. No matter if I end up in charge of dessert or sides I like to keep at least one recipe the same and switch up the others with something new. I also had the idea to make some extra pie crusts and cookie dough and freeze it for future use. I'm sure there will be lots more baking in a few weeks for Christmas. Here's the menu:

A friend and I went over to Union Square Farmers Market this past weekend and I took a few photos using my phone. I especially like going in the fall to get some warm apple cider and some baked goods before heading over to the Union Square Theatre to catch a movie. Rosemary wreaths smell amazing

Butternut Squash Soup for dinner yesterday using some items that I picked up at the market. It so easy to make.

2-3 tabs of butter
1 large yellow onion chopped
3 small or 1 large butternut squash peeled and cubed
1 1/2 cans of chicken or vegetable stock
dash of nutmeg
salt and pepper to taste

In a large pot add the butter and onion. Cook the onion until it's clear (about 5-10 minutes). Make sure to stir so that they do not burn them. When they are done add the squash and enough stock to just cover the vegetables. Bring it to a boil and then cover. Cook until the squash is soft (about 20-30 minutes). Add the nutmeg, salt and pepper. I like to use a hand blender like this Cuisinart to mash it up until it is a creamy soup texture or you can put into a blender or food processor but be sure to do it in small batches and allow the steam to release.

I found that using photos as examples with my vendors was really useful in conveying my inspirations and the style that I wanted. I seriously brought photos to every meeting, including a packet of photos for the photographer. Obviously, your budget, season, etc may cause cahnges but I think my vendors really came close to the style that I requested while still sticking to my budget. Here are some examples:

When I first started planning my wedding I was so inspired by 2000 Dollar Budget Wedding and A $10,000 Wedding. With that said, I still wanted a traditional wedding and there were some things that we felt were too important to us or our family and friend to do without. While I definitely did not stay within budget, we do live in New York and I think overall we didn't do too bad plus we had a fantastic time! Our vendors did a wonderful job and were so great to stay within our budget and still deliver fantastic service. It was stressful but fun planning everything and on the day of I was able to have a great time knowing that all was taken care of. The main reason I'm posting the prices of each vendor is that I really thought I was going to come close to budget until I found out how much rentals and other items were going to cost. I figure that most brides do not have event planning experience and certain items are difficult to gage when setting up your budget without this experience. So I hope this helps anyone who is in the midst of setting their budget and planning their day.

Now that the wedding is over I can back to decorating and designing my apartment. I did the best I could with wall colors and decorating when we first moved in last year but I never really finished the rooms as we were engaged only 3 weeks later. So now I'm trying to decide which room to finish first. I'm leaning towards the bedroom. Here is what it looks like now:

I'm thinking about adding a coverlet, bed skirt, a small dresser to replace my nightstand and rolling drawers (too low down to see in the photo), decorative pillows (just what my husband always wanted), two small rugs on each side of the bed, new drawer pulls on the vanity and dresser, a lamp shade and more art for the walls. How do you feel about the mixed woods? I will probably get a small dresser/nightstand second hand that will need to be painted. Should I go with a semi gloss black to tie the dresser in? I'm so sorry that I have been absent. Things are really picking up at work as my busy season begins and I'm still trying to catch up on everything that I had neglected during the wedding and then some.

This is my favorite wrapper!

I did take some time a couple of weekends ago to visit the Mast Brothers Chocolate factory over in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. These chocolate bars are very well known amongst the wedding blogs for their beautiful wrappings. The wrappers are wonderful, but the chocolate is fantastic! They have a wonderful flavor Fleur De Sel which contains sea salt. It has a flavor that reminds me chocolate covered pretzels but way better. It's is an indulgence that will satisfy both the sweet tooth and the salty cravings. You can purchase the bars from the factory of course, Murray Cheese, and countless stores in Brooklyn - we saw it in tons of stores as we shopped in Williamsburg. In addition to a snack, they also make great favors!

Rain on Your Wedding Day

The NY Times has a wonderful article on how to prep for the possible rainy day wedding. We luckily had a beautiful day but had planned for a rainy one just in case. We also had to keep the budget in mind as Darcy Miller points out. Our location only held 85 people seated. We could move out doors and invite more but that would have required a tent and flooring in case the weather was bad. Even with nice weather, my dress has a good share of dirt and grass stains so I like Claudia Hanlin's suggestion on a change of shoes and a cloth if your ceremony is going to be out doors. Another issue that I ran into was the price of white umbrellas. I ordered a few large bronze colored umbrellas from target which we much more affordable and my cousin who's wedding is next weekend has purchased them in blue, one of her wedding colors. You can save close to $10-20 per umbrella but not choosing a white one.

Every year the Long Island Dalia Society has it's annual show at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum on Long Island where they have a gorgeous garden. The show just passed last week but the garden is still there and the fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit.

My dream laundry room via An eye for I:nteriors from Hampton Design

Since my return from the honeymoon I have been slowly (sloth like, if you ask my husband) attempting to really clean our apartment and restore it to it's original state prior to the wedding craft/DIY war zone that took effect at least 6 months ago. Of course my cleaning has already resulted in furniture rearrangement. Since I was a child, I have had the bad habit of making a massive mess in reorganizing while cleaning. It is a messy beginning but it usually turns out for the best. Each day at work I now think about what room, closet or task I will conquer when I get home and so I couldn't help but read this article today in the NY Times. I don't have a washer or dryer in my building so I doubt I will fulfill its suggestions completely but the perfectionist in me now has the itch to properly separate my clothes. Perhaps it would cut down on my shopping if my clothes looked better longer. I had no idea that laundry could be so involved, of course I never really thought about how the machine actually worked to get your clothes clean either. Note to self: attempt to restore the brightness in my whites at the next laundromat visit.

We just got back the other day from the wedding and honeymoon and could not have had a better time. The wedding went rather smoothly and what didn't go as planned, I hardly noticed and definitely didn't care. If I could change anything it would have been to move more stuff to my parents house of the weeks as I had to make an unplanned trip back to my apartment as I could not fit it all. Also, I definitely would have set up the photo sharing website before the wedding and placed info cards on the tables. So many people took wonderful pictures that I have seen on Facebook but they are low res so I have not been able to print them out. I think one of the most important decisions for the wedding was choosing the vendors. All of ours came through and were above & beyond what we expected. They made everything so easy and enjoyable. So until I have high res wedding photos I will have to settle on the honeymoon pictures....

We had a fantastic time at Calabash Cove in St. Lucia. The resort was even better than we had expected! The staff was wonderful and so kind - we were on a first name basis by day two. It was also nice and small. At the very most, there were only 26 visitors who were mostly honeymooners too. Even though there was only one restaurant the food was amazing and the only lunch/dinners that we repeated were our favorites. It was a wonderful and relaxing time overall. In comparison to other all inclusives, this has been by far our favorite resort!

I spent most of mine running around and completing wedding projects as I am hoping to have 95% of it done by Friday so I can mostly relax the week leading up to it and enjoy all of the friends and family who have come from out of town! I was just going through some beautiful photos at Desire to Inspire and there was a home from the Island of Guernsey over England. I just so happen to be in the middle of reading a lovely book : The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Potato Peel Pie Recipe
Here’s a recipe for a potato peel pie, but I warn you, it tastes like paste. The more authentic it is, the nastier. These ingredients will make a very small pie (expand at will):

1 potato

1 beet

1 Tablespoon milk

Peel the potato and put the peelings in a pie pan. Don’t cook the peels, because you’re in the middle of an Occupation and you don’t have any fuel. Boil the potato and the beet together in salty water, but not for very long, due to the fuel problem. Just until you can stick a fork in the potato. Take them out and mash them up with the milk. Pour the glop in the pie pan. Bake at 375 for as short a time as is consonant with digestion (fuel again), say, fifteen minutes.
The finished product will look quite attractive and pink. If you squint, you can almost imagine raspberries. Don’t be fooled. It looks a lot better than it is. However, if you forgot that you were in the middle of WWII and added a bunch of butter and milk and salt, it could be quite tasty.

I just finished reading this article in the New York Times. The brief story is that a husband and wife who live in a Brownstone that needs to be renovated have completely different ideas. I would say that I am a lot like the wife except for the fact that I would have freaked out after six months of living with her husband. I'm sure he is very nice and all, it's just I know my personality and we wouldn't have worked. So I am now 3 weeks from getting married and a dream of mine would be to have a fixer upper Brooklyn Brownstone. My fiance on the other hand likes the idea of renting a penthouse so that he never has to renovate anything and forget the idea of landscaping. I am lucky in the fact that my fiance is not super cheap like the guy in the article so I might still have a shot at that Brownstone thing - I'm just going to have to be prepared to have a stay at home contractor job!

Have you been to Felix Doolittle's site? They have charming invites, labels, stationery, etc. I believe that I stumbled to the site a few months back via a blog but they just popped up again in an email from Gourmet Magazine. If I can find the time to seriously bake again I might have to order myself some of these babies. Plus they have really cute custom magnets!
